Metropolitan Welcomes Wembley Head Groundsman

Chris Twyman

A Landmark Day for Grassroots Football at Metropolitan Bushey

Metropolitan Bushey proudly marked a major milestone, welcoming some of the most respected figures in UK groundskeeping following an exceptional set of results in our Football Foundation PitchPower report.

We had the honour of hosting:

  • Karl Standley, Head Grounds Manager, Wembley Stadium
  • Cameron Hutcheon, Deputy Head Grounds Manager, Wembley Stadium
  • Jake Scully, Football Development Officer, Hertfordshire FA

Their visit recognised the outstanding work of our own dynamic ground’s duo — John and James — who have delivered one of our strongest pitch assessments to date.

14 Out of 16 Pitches Rated ‘Good’ or ‘Advanced’

The Football Foundation’s PitchPower assessment is the national standard for evaluating the quality, safety and playability of grassroots football surfaces.

This year, Metropolitan Bushey achieved an exceptional result:

14 out of our 16 pitches were rated ‘Good’ or ‘Advanced’.

This places our grounds among the highest-performing community football sites in Hertfordshire — a testament to the dedication, expertise and year-round commitment of John and James.

Their work includes:

  • Seasonal renovations
  • Precision mowing and turf management
  • Drainage and surface-level improvements
  • Soil health monitoring
  • Collaboration with Football Foundation advisors

The visit from Wembley’s senior grounds team was both a celebration and an opportunity for shared learning, with expert insights exchanged on maintenance techniques, machinery, and long-term pitch development.

Home to Hertfordshire’s Grassroots Football Community

Our pitches support a thriving network of local clubs, academies and community teams. Among those who call Metropolitan Bushey home are:

  • Bricket Wood FC
  • Bushey & Oxhey Football Club
  • Garston Ladies Football Club
  • Livelykicks Football Academy
  • Old Salvatorians Football Club
  • Oxhey Football Club

These clubs represent hundreds of players — from youth teams to adults — who rely on safe, high-quality pitches to train, compete and grow within the sport.

Our improved PitchPower ratings directly benefit these teams, ensuring better playing conditions, fewer cancellations and a more enjoyable football experience for all.

A Proud Moment for Our Grounds Team

The visit from Wembley’s Head and Deputy Grounds Managers is a rare honour and a powerful endorsement of the work happening behind the scenes at Metropolitan Bushey.

Karl Standley and Cameron Hutcheon spent time walking the grounds, reviewing maintenance processes and speaking with John and James about the challenges and successes of managing such a large multi-pitch site.

Their feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting:

  • Excellent grass coverage
  • Strong surface consistency
  • Effective drainage
  • Clear evidence of professional maintenance standards

This recognition reinforces our commitment to providing some of the best grassroots football facilities in the region.

Looking Ahead: Continued Investment in Quality

Metropolitan Bushey remains dedicated to improving and expanding our football offering. With support from the Football Foundation, Hertfordshire FA and our visiting experts from Wembley, we will continue to:

  • Enhance pitch quality
  • Invest in equipment and renovation programmes
  • Support local clubs and academies
  • Strengthen our role as a hub for community sport

This achievement is not just a milestone — it’s a foundation for even greater progress.

Thank You to Our Partners and Community. Your support and collaboration help us deliver outstanding facilities for the local football community.
